A man currently serving a life sentence in Angola was connected to the rape of two women over a decade ago.

The Lake Charles Police Department reports that the suspect, Darwin Junia Hutchinson, was additionally charged with two counts of Aggravated Rape for an incident that occurred in June 1992.

Officials say two young women reported that a man broke into their car, then kidnapped them once they got in the vehicle. They say he was armed with a knife and forced them to drive to a secluded area. He then forced them both out of the car and raped them.

The suspect then took their driver’s licenses and said that if they told anyone, he would pay them a visit and bring some of their friends. He then made them drive him to another area.

The women went to the hospital and contacted police. Sexual assault kits were obtained and evidence was collected. However, police never found the suspect and the case remained unsolved for all these years.

In 2011 the mother of one of the victim’s called to check in on the case. The officer checked with the Evidence Division and located the sexual assault kits. They were then submitted to the Southwest Crime Lab for comparison to DNA evidence.

In March 2012, the DNA-CODIS lab found a match to the samples. It was linked to Hutchinson, who is currently serving a life sentence in Angola for an aggravated rape that happened back in 1999.

In April 2012, investigators went to Angola and interviewed Hutchinson. They took a swab and submitted it for DNA analysis. The lab matched the sample to the rape kits in September 2012.

Hutchinson was indicted by a grand jury in April 2013 for two counts of Aggravated Rape, putting an end to the cold case.
