An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death for a prison inmate who died this afternoon.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that Antoine Tobias, 40, died in a local hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 23 after he complained of breathing issues the night before. Officials say medical staff at the Jail Medical Clinic attempted to revive Tobias, who was unresponsive after collapsing to the floor shortly after making his complaint.

Tobias was being held in the St. Tammany Parish Prison on a $200,000 bond for an incident that occurred on Christmas Day in 2012. Reports indicate that Tobias was armed with a handgun when he attempted to break into the home of his in-laws.

When deputies arrived on scene they believed Tobias was acting in a threatening manner. He allegedly fired shots at the deputies and they returned fire.

Tobias was apprehended at the scene and treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained in the gunfire exchange. He was then booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail for two counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder of a Police Officer and Aggravated Burglary.
