Prank phone lands Kaplan woman in jail
KAPLAN, La (VPSO) -- According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, one Kaplan woman has been arrested and booked into the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center after making a prank call to 911 early yesterday morning.
Sheriff Couvillon says that at approximately 8:48 am Thursday morning Vermilion 911 received a call from a woman frantically screaming that a man had a gun to her head, and then the phone went silent.
Sheriff Couvillon says attempts to reestablish connection with the caller by 911 personnel as well as the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office were however unsuccessful.
Sheriff’s Patrol deputies as well as detectives were able to obtain a GPS location on where the call may have come from as well as a tower ping, which led officers to Peloquin’s home in Kaplan.
Sheriff Couvillon said that when officers questioned the 35-year old woman about the call, she stated that she knew nothing of a 911 call and that she had lost her cell phone sometime back.
Sheriff Couvillon says that at this point officers were still uncertain if indeed there may have been a female subject being held at gunpoint by someone, but did know that if someone was in harms way it would have been in that general location based on GPS information unless the victim would have been taken someplace else by the alleged gunman.
After an extensive canvass of the area, detectives were able to later retrieve a copy of the 911 call, and were able to verify that the person who made the 911 call was in fact Monique Peloquin.
Peloquin has been arrested and charged with False Swearing for the Purpose of Violating Public Health or Safety, and no bond has been set as of yet.
Finally, Sheriff Couvillon says that Law Enforcement time is very valuable and pranks of such serious nature could have put the lives of officers and innocent people in jeopardy, as well as taking away officers’ time of rendering assistance to others who may have had a valid complaint.
