NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: The Orleans Parish Coroner has identified the shooter as Bajkanwar Aulakh, 20, from Lafayette, LA. Investigators say Aulakh shot his 24-year-old friend before shooting and killing himself. Aulakh was arrested by Lafayette Police on March 8, 2014, on Domestic Battery charges. NOPD is continuing its investigation at this time.
ORIGINAL STORY: Monday, New Orleans Police are continuing their investigation into an early morning shooting and standoff that left one man dead and another man injured.
It all happened on the 17th floor of the Westin Hotel near Canal Street. The hotel is located at 100 Rue Iberville, connected to the Canal Place shopping center.
Four men were reportedly staying in the hotel room. They range in age from 20 to 25 years old.
NOPD says, a 23-year-old man who was asleep inside of the room woke up around 5:00 am. Investigators say three of his friends who were also in town for the weekend came back to the room after partying in the French Quarter to get rest. The witness said he and his 25-year-old friend went to sleep, but they were woken up when he heard the 24-year-old shooting victim telling his 20-year-old friend to “put the gun down.”
The witness said he observed the gunshot victim sitting on the edge of the bed while his friend, who was holding a gun, was sitting on the opposite bed pointing a black pistol at the victim. The man claimed the gunman appeared dazed and confused under the influence of some substance. This behavior continued for a while until the gunman fired one shot into the victim’s chest. The witness stated he and his other 25-year-old friend fled the room to get help from the front desk when a second shot was heard coming from the room.
The SWAT team negotiated with the man inside the hotel room for three hours. At that point, investigators claim they heard a gunshot from inside the hotel room. Investigators say, once they heard the gunshot, they forced their way into the room. Swat team members rescued a 24-year-old Lafayette man who had allegedly been shot by his 20-year-old acquaintance inside of a 17th floor room within the Westin Hotel. He is being treated at a hospital, where he is listed in stable condition according to police.
The 20-year-old man was dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead just before 10:00 AM on Sunday.
Investigators say the four men were all friends visiting from the Lafayette area. During the course of the investigation detectives found two pistols inside of the room.
This was a joint operation between the New Orleans Police Department, EMS, NOFD and Westin Hotel Management.
NOPD says they're continuing an investigation, and wouldn't provide a timeline on when the agency will identify the victims of the shooting.
