After several accusations of brutality, a Port Allen Police officer has entered his resignation.

Jasmione Clark had worked for the Port Allen Police Department for more than two years before he submitted his letter of resignation on Monday, Feb. 27. He says today his decision had nothing to do with the allegations of violent behavior leveled against him.

Back on September 24, 2011, Clark had an altercation with Brandon Whaley, 27, during a traffic stop. Whaley's relatives say he was beaten so badly he almost died.

Port Allen Police Chief Ken Bates says the incident is just one in a long list of bad behavior for Clark over his two-and-half years with the department.

"There were interoffice problems with the officer before and one or two instances before right around the time I was taking chief, taken in as chief and right after that," Ken Bates, Port Allen Police Chief, said.

Clark says the incident with Whaley is overblown and Whaley only suffered self-induced scratches from it.

But Chief Bates says he's simply had enough.

"We were going to terminate him,” he said. “I was going to ask to terminate him. Last night at a meeting at 5:30 [in the evening]. Then, yesterday evening at 2:30, he turned in his letter of resignation, which I read before the city council."

Clark told me his decision to step down had little to do with that and more to do with being tired of the administration not supporting him. This is despite never having been suspended by the department.

Bates says in order for the department to move past this rough time both officers and citizens need to play their part.

“I want the citizens to respect the officers and I want officers to respect the citizens."

Bates plans on asking the city council next Wednesday for permission to hire two extra police officers to pick up the slack. As for Clark, he plans on going back to school.
