A 27-year-old woman from Ponchatoula died this morning after she was hit by a vehicle while she was attempting to cross I-12.

The Louisiana State Police reports that the incident happened at roughly 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7. We’re told Crystal Joiner was attempting to walk across the westbound lanes of I-12 roughly 2 miles from the Robert exit when she was hit.

Investigators learned that prior to the crash Joiner was involved in an argument with her boyfriend. The two were driving when it happened. Joiner’s boyfriend pulled over on the eastbound shoulder and Joiner got out of the car and ran across the Interstate.

Joiner made it across and was walking on the shoulder when she then stepped in front of a vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A toxicology test is being performed to determine if she was impaired.

The 60-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck Joiner was reportedly uninjured. No charges are being filed against her.
