A fugitive took Police on a chase through the streets of Baton Rouge last night.

It happened around 8:00 p.m. last night after an officer spotted a stolen City of Rayne pickup truck leaving the Alamo Plaza hotel on Florida Blvd. We’re told the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, and that’s when the chase began.

The pursuit ended at N. Lobdell and Choctaw after the suspect, John Smith, 42, crashed into another vehicle. Smith attempted to run on foot.

“An off-duty K-9 unit who was working extra-duty in the area responded and the dog tracked and apprehended the suspect within a short time,” Sgt. Don Kelly, Baton Rouge Police Department, explained.

Kelly continued to explain that the suspect was acting odd after the arrest saying “he began violently beating his own head against the prisoner screen, causing injuries to himself.”

Smith was taken to Earl K. Long Hospital for treatment of the injuries he allegedly caused to himself, as well as a dog bite sustained from the K-9 unit.

Smith is a DOC escapee from Rayne.
