A murder suspect escaped the Iberville Parish jail this afternoon, but he's back in custody now.

Akeem Gailes escaped from his holding cell at the courthouse.

He was in the middle of his trial for allegedly killing a man at the Plaquemine Mardi Gras parade last year.

The judge in his case declared a mistrial; now, prosecutors now have 24 hours to appeal.

Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi says he will make sure this doesn't happen again.

Stassi is investigating how Gailes escaped, but he says the video footage does show the bailiff locking his cell.
