A Slidell woman has been arrested and charged with 10 counts of Medicaid fraud for filing false claims, state Attorney General Buddy Caldwell said.

Members of Louisiana's Medicaid Fraud Countrol Unit arrested Latoya M. Shelton, 25, with assistance from the SUNO Police Department. Shelton, who is a personal care attendant, was taken into custody on Wednesday and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on 10 counts of Medicaid fraud.

Officials said Shelton submitted timesheets stating that she provided caregiver services, such as cooking, grooming, and bathing, to a Medicaid patient on the same dates and times the patient was receiving treatment at a New Orleans medical center, and also while a resident at a Slidell care center.

Personal care attendants are hired by Medicaid providers to assist physically handicapped Medicaid recipients. The personal care attendants keep service logs and records of hours worked with each client and submit the hours to the Medicaid provider for payment. In turn, the Medicaid provider submits the hours to the Medicaid program for payment of services rendered.
