An owner of a Smoothie World in Lafayette is in the hospital for non-medical issues after he allegedly fought deputies and displayed some bizarre behavior.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident happened on Thursday, Jan. 31 at roughly 8:00 p.m. We’re told employees called deputies after their boss, Tai Nguyen, allegedly armed himself with three Samaria style knives. They said he was acting odd and that he locked them inside the store with him.

When deputies arrived on scene to what they believed to be a hostage situation, Nguyen was no where to be found. He allegedly left the store and drove off in his vehicle. However, he returned to the business while deputies were still on scene. He allegedly exited his vehicle with the knives employees had reported about earlier.

Officials say deputies attempted to make contact with Nguyen, but he got in his car and drove it around to the back of the strip mall and entered the store through the rear door. He allegedly locked himself and his employees in the store yet again.

Deputies managed to convince Nguyen to allow the employees to leave. However, he refused to unlock the door for deputies and exit the building. During that time he posted messages to his Facebook page.

Eventually a key was obtained by a co-owner of the business and they were able to enter the building. Nguyen allegedly became combative with deputies and suffered very minor injuries in the process. He was then transported to the University Medical Center where he is currently undergoing evaluation. So far Nguyen has not been issued any charges.

“They’re determining whether he intended to take anyone hostage or if he meant to do any harm,” Cpt. Kip Judice, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, said when explaining why no charges have been filed.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.
