Authorities are investigating an Orleans Parish sheriff's deputy who they said accidentally shot and killed her estranged husband following an argument in Waggaman on Sunday, March 4.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said deputies received a call at about 5:53 p.m. reporting a shooting in the 100 block of Daffodil Drive.

Deputies said responding officers found the victim, Nicholas Houston, 25, lying on the ground between two cars in the driveway with a single gunshot wound on his left side. Houston was pronounced dead on the scene, investigators said.

Detectives said also present on the scene was Houston's estranged wife, Honore Estes, 25, a deputy with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said Estes initially told deputies that she and Houston, who were recently separated, were involved in an argument, and while she was swinging her purse in his direction, Estes said a weapon inside of her purse accidentally discharged and struck her husband.

Investigators said Estes later recanted her story and told the officers that she was holding the weapon and waving it while continuing the argument. She claimed the weapon discharged at that time, deputies said.

Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman said Estes has been suspended without pay while pending a criminal investigation by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Internal Investigation Division of the OPSO.

"As we all know too well, domestic violence touches every corner of our community. Tragically, this includes law enforcement and the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office," Gusman said. "Our investigators are working alongside the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office to determine the cause of this incident. We will follow all of the procedures of this office, as this investigation continues."

Estes has been employed at the OPSO since November 2009.
