'Operation United' nets 27 drug defendants in Plaquemines Parish

Sheriff Lonnie J. Greco, Sr., announces the results of a four month long undercover narcotics operation by the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division.

On Monday, May 13, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division began a round-up of 27 defendants charged with various drug distribution and possession charges as part of an undercover narcotics operation called “Operation United.” The operation was named such after the Narcotics Division was restructured by Sheriff Greco to become more efficient and accountable.

Narcotics purchases were made from the defendants throughout the Westbank of Plaquemines Parish. Illegal drugs that were purchased and/or seized during the investigation were as follows: approximately ¾ of an ounce of crack cocaine (20 grams), 1.1 lbs. of marijuana (475 grams), two dosage units of Ecstasy, and 92 dosage units of prescription pills (Hydrocodone, Cyclobenzaprine, Diazepam, Tramadol, Gabrapentin, Morphine, and Naproxen 500mg). The total street value of the illegal narcotics is estimated at approximately $4,000.

As of Thursday, May 30, 2013, 21 of the 27 defendants have been arrested. Three defendants are currently at-large and have active warrants for their arrests. One defendant has been located in a drug rehabilitation facility, and two defendants are incarcerated in correctional facilities throughout the State of Louisiana (one in Monroe and another in Lafayette). Six of the defendants are currently on Probation or Parole for the State of Louisiana.

Of particular concern, 20 of the defendants have prior arrest records, which 17 are for narcotics distribution and/or possession. Noteworthy convictions include attempted 2nd degree murder, armed robbery, armed robbery with a firearm, burglary, obstruction of justice, simple arson, crime against nature and felony theft. One defendant has an open aggravated burglary case in Lafayette Parish.
