NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) — A New Orleans police officer was suspended without pay after being arrested Wednesday morning for illegally having a gun in a French Quarter bar, according to a police spokesperson.
State troopers contaced NOPD officials after responding to the incident, and officers arrested 34-year-old August Michel at about 2 a.m. at a bar in the 600 block of Bourbon Street. He and another officer were off-duty and not in uniform at the time.
Public Integrity Bureau investigators said Michel got into a fight with other customers inside the bar. The bar's security broke up the fight and disarmed Michel in the process, according to the report.
Security contacted the troopers who were nearby.
Michel was accused of violating a state law that prohibits officers from carrying their weapons in an alcoholic outlet unless they are in an official capacity. Departmental rules also prohibit officers from entering alcoholic outlets on duty without notifying the Communications Division.
Michel is a 14-year veteran of the NOPD.
The incident was under investigation.
