BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — An officer with the Baton Rouge Police Department was arrested for a physical altercation that happened when he was off-duty.
Officials say the incident took place at the Varsity Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 7. Officer Taylor S. Derousselle, 24, is accused of hitting an employee in the face.
“He was placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation,” Cpl. Don Coppola, Baton Rouge Police Department, said.
According to the arrest report, the victim is a bouncer for the bar. He noticed Derousselle was involved in a disturbance with another individual, so he escorted him out of the bar via a rear arm restraint.
“Once the victim and the defendant reached the front lobby area of the business, the defendant disengaged himself from the victim’s physical escort, turned around towards him and stated ‘I’m a [expletive] cop, I will arrest everyone here,” the arrest report noted.
Witnesses claim that Derousselle pulled out his BRPD identification and displayed it after making the statement. However, that’s when Derousselle allegedly struck the victim in the face with a closed fist.
After the initial investigation, the victim provided a medical record showing that he sustained a hairline fracture to his left cheek. Derousselle was questioned and he admitted to hitting the victim.
Although the incident happened off-duty and was only a misdemeanor, officials say the allegation could result in his termination.
“He is a commissioned police officer, so you're held to a higher standard on or off duty,” Cpl. Coppola explained.
Derousselle was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 17 and charged with Simple Battery. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. His bond was set at $500.
Derousselle is currently assigned to Uniform Patrol, 4th District. He has only been a police officer for 7 months.
