BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — An 18-year-old man was found shot to death this morning in New Orleans. His body was located near an elementary school.
The New Orleans Police Department reports that the body was found shortly after 9:00 a.m. by a family member of the victim. We’re told the young man was discovered near an elementary school located near the intersection of South Robertson Street and Jackson Avenue. The body was located in a secluded area bounded by shrubbery and bushes.
“The Orleans Parish School Board wants to stress to parents that all students are safe and the instructional day is progressing as normal at Mahalia Jackson Elementary. The school went on lockdown and will remain so throughout the day. The students are not aware of nor saw what occurred outside the school's protected fencing. The School Board's thoughts and prayers are for the victim's family. We mourn the loss of this teenager who did not deserve to die so young," said Superintendent Stan Smith.
Detectives are currently trying to determine whether the shooting is related to an incident that occurred on Sunday, Sept. 23. That shooting happened just a few blocks away from where the victim was found. During that incident an unknown man was shot in the foot after shots were fired following a second line.
