NEW IBERIA, La (NBC33) -- A Deputy assigned to the Iberia Parish Jail has now become an inmate there.

Richard Coons, 23, was arrested on Feb. 28 by narcotics agents working for the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office. 

Agents arrested Coons while he was in possession of marijuana, and believe he intended to smuggle both marijuana and cell phones to inmates in the Iberia Parish Jail.

Coons has been charged with Possession of Schedule 1 Narcotics with Intent to Distribute and Malfeasance in Office.
