THIS IS AN NBC33 NEWS UPDATE: The driver that caused the accident on east 1-12 at Essen Lane has been identified as Veronica Williams, 28, of New Roads. The Baton Rouge Police Department confirms that five children ranging from 1 to 9-years old were passengers in her vehicle, of which Williams was the mother of four.
None of the children in the vehicle were properly restrained. The one-year-old child is still facing life-threatening injuries due to being ejected from the vehicle.
The Baton Rouge Police Department has also confirmed that criminal and traffic charges are forthcoming.
ORIGINAL STORY: 06-20-11: 10:00 a.m. - Shortly before 9 a.m. a multiple car accident shut down I-12 in the east bound lane at Essen, backing up traffic for hours. Three EMS units transported eight individuals to two different area hospitals; four were children all under the age of 10-years-old.
The initial report from a witness who called in the accident included that a child was ejected from the vehicle. Police have confirmed that to be true and the child is suffering from critical injuries. The Traffic Homicide Division is currently working the investigation, and initial reports indicate that those four children were not properly restrained.
"We see no child restraints in the vehicle either. No child safety seat of any type,” Sgt. Don Stone, Baton Rouge Police Department, explained at the scene of the accident. “If you're going to transport a young child, whether it's your car or someone else's vehicle, make sure that you have them properly restrained in that vehicle."
The children were passengers in the vehicle that was at fault in the accident. We’re told the driver lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons while rounding a curve on the entrance ramp. The car crossed over the grassy median and collided with two other vehicles traveling in the east bound lane. Two children were also passengers in one of the vehicles struck, but they were unharmed due to having proper restraints.
No citations have been issued thus far, but the Baton Rouge Police Department does anticipate that as a possibility at the conclusion of the investigation.
