ALGIERS, LA — A 51-year-old Algiers mother has been arrested for concealing evidence linked to sex crimes her son committed.
Joy Usey Perez was charged with Accessory After the Fact to Aggravated Rape and Obstruction of Justice.
On Monday, July 16, 2012, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation in reference to an aggravated rape that occurred in Belle Chasse in March 2011.
During the investigation, Dustin Richard Perez, then 21, was arrested on July 25, 2012 and charged with one count of Aggravated Tape after it was learned that he held a pistol to the head of a 16-year-old victim while he raped her.
At the time of the investigation, Detectives from Plaquemines Parish and the New Orleans Police Department conducted several search warrants at Dustin Perez's Orleans Parish residence, which he shared with his mother, in which clothing and weapons were recovered.
Upon releasing Dustin Perez’s arrest information to the public in September 2012 and requesting other victims to come forward, the PPSO was successful in identifying two additional victims. As a result, Dustin Perez was subsequently rebooked with an additional count of Aggravated Rape and felony Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile. The ages of those victims were 16 and 15, respectively.
On November 7, 2012, Dustin Perez was indicted by a Plaquemines Parish grand jury for two counts of Aggravated Rape.
On Thursday, August 8, 2013, detectives discovered that Dustin Perez’s mother, Joy Usey Perez, had been hiding her son’s cellular telephone from the police since his initial 2012 aggravated rape arrest. In November 2012, after her son was indicted by the grand jury, Joy Perez told a witness that she had been hiding Dustin’s cell phone from the police in the event they would return with another search warrant. Joy Perez related that she was concealing the cell phone in her truck when she is at home and that she keeps it in her purse when she is at work.
On August 14, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Joy Perez was arrested in the parking lot of Belle Chasse Lockup when she arrived to visit her son for a court hearing. Upon placing Joy Perez under arrest, detectives located the aforementioned cell phone in her purse.
Detectives obtained search warrants for Perez’s vehicle, as well as the cell phone recovered in her purse. The results of those warrants are pending.
On August 14, Joy Perez appeared for a Magistrate Hearing, at which time her bond was set at $25,000. On August 16, Joy Perez posted bond and was released from custody.
Dustin Perez remains in the custody of the PPSO in lieu of a $1.35 million bond and is charged with two counts of Aggravated Rape and one count of Felony Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile.
The PPSO continues to believe there may be additional victims out there and are urging those victimized by Dustin Perez or anyone with information on the crimes to call 504-297-5277 or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
