MARRERO, LA (NBC33) — A Pastor in Marrero is accused of battering a young boy who was misbehaving during a Sunday morning service.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says Daniel Smith, 36, of Gretna was consulted after church by the mother of two young boys (9-10) who were acting up during the morning service. She took the boys to be counseled by Pastor Smith.
The following day the Sheriff’s Office was called to Woodmere Elementary School in Marrero to look into a child cruelty complaint. That’s because one boy went to the school nurse after complaining of soreness.
The nurse says she saw several dark, red bruises to his abdomen, arm and back.
The boy told deputies about the counseling session and said Pastor Smith beat him with a belt. He says he was hit so hard that he began crying and even urinated himself.
The mother of the two boys was interviewed as well. She says she is a single mother and often seeks the Pastor’s assistance for family counseling. She denied, however, having knowledge of him physically disciplining her sons in the past.
On Monday, March 19, Smith was interviewed by detectives. We’re told he refused to cooperated with the investigation.
An arrest warrant was issued.
Pastor Smith was arrested and transported to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center and booked with Cruelty to Juvenile and Simple Battery.
