A man allegedly threw a homemade explosive at his neighbor during an argument. What investigators believe, however, is that the man intended to take things even further.

“When we searched his residence, he had several incendiary devices in his home,” Cpt. Ryan Turner, Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, explained. “We believe his intent was to set his neighbors house on fire using those devices.”

The incident started at roughly 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7 at a home located on Cherokee Street in New Iberia. Deputies were called to the scene after a man called 911 claiming that his neighbor threw a bomb at him and threatened to set his house on fire.

“We know that an argument started between the two neighbors, but what they were fighting about we’re not sure,” Cpt. Turner continued.

Deputies confronted Thadeus Hurst, 26, who is accused of throwing the explosive.

“It was a very primitive and very crude device he put together using accelerants,” Cpt. Turner noted. “We have contacted the AFT and they are looking into the charges, because he may have violated federal laws.”

Hurst has been charged with Possession of a Bomb, Manufacturing and Possessing a Delayed Action Incendiary Device, Arson, Use of Explosives and Terrorizing. Due to the location of his home, he was additionally charged with Communication of False Information of Planned Bomb on or within a School Zone or Firearm Free Zone.

“His residence is located across the street from an elementary school,” Cpt. Turner said. “He did not threaten to do any harm to the school, but his home was located within a firearm free zone.”
