An Amite man has been arrested after allegedly burglarizing a vehicle that was parked on Highway 16.

On August 22, while patrolling the area of North Main St. in Amite, a deputy saw a black male, later identified as Eugene Hickerson, 42, walking on the side of the roadway holding a large plastic garbage bag.

With large amount of the burglaries occurring in the area, it is known that concealing property in garbage bags is common practice among petty thieves when transporting stolen property. With that knowledge, the deputy decided to initiate a roadside investigation.

The contents inside of the garbage bag were items previously stolen from a Dodge truck parked on Hwy 16.

As a result, Hicherson was arrested and charged with Burglary of a Vehicle, Possession of Stolen Property and for being a fugitive of another jurisdiction.

Subsequently, deputies were able to return the property back to their rightful owner.
