The quiet of the small apartment complex on Cottondale Drive was shattered early this morning when Munzer Zidan, 35, was shot and killed while sleeping in his bed.

"There was a victim who had been shot in the chest in his bedroom, while he laid next to his 6 year old little boy," explained Cpl. Don Cappola with the Baton Rouge Police Department.

The shooting happened at roughly 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10.

"Everybody here has family, kids playing around outside and this really worries us," explained one resident of the complex.

The resident didn’t want to be identified by name, for fear of retaliation, but several residents told us that lately the crime has been out of control.

"This is very unusual for this neighborhood. I’ve been here for almost 10 years and this is the first time something like this has happened," he said.

Police confirmed there has been an uptick in violent crime in the area, they are not sure if the crimes are related. With no suspects in custody after the murder they are now asking for the public’s help.

"We have some reports of some previous criminal activity in that area, which we are looking into, but we urge anyone with information to contact violent crimes or crime stoppers," added Cappola.

Residents who live in the complex said that for years it has been quiet and crime-free, but the recent rash of violence has had them considering a move.

"Everybody is really talking about it right now and unless the police do something about this, everyone is seriously thinking to move right now," said one resident.

This is the 48th homicide the Baton Rouge Police Department has investigated in 2013. This incident is the 8th homicide in the 70815 area code. It is now second to the 70805 area code for the highest number of homicides.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed to NBC33 News on Monday, Aug. 5, that the parish has seen 20 less homicides this year when compared with last year. There were 96 homicides in East Baton Rouge Parish during 2012, which was a reported 4.7 percent increase compared to 2011.
