Man shot after attempting a home invasion

On Monday, Sept. 12, deputies responded to a residence in Baton Rouge after reports of shots being fired.

Upon arriving, deputies learned that the resident fired a shot after hearing someone trying to break into his home, The homeowner stated that he gave a loud verbal command before firing a 12 gauge shotgun through the back door of his home. When the homeowner looked through the door, he observed three black males running from his back yard. Deputies found a tire iron which was allegedly used in attempts to breach the back door of the residence. Strong evidence on the door indicated an attempt of force entry was intended.

During this time, a 20 year old black male, Allie Hines of Natalbany, was admitted to a hospital with a severe gunshot wound to his chest. It is believed that the homeowner, fearing for his and his family's safety shot Hines in the chest as he was attempting to break into his home.

Hines is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries and is in critical condition. Hines faces aggravated burglary charges upon his release.

The investigation is on going and additional charges may be forthcoming. It is believed that the homeowner was justified in his actions.
