According to District Attorney Scott M. Perrilloux, on Dec. 8, 2011, Judge Doug Hughes sentenced Charles Edwards, 25, to serve 20 years with the Department of Corrections for Second Degree Cruelty to Juveniles.

Edwards, of Denham Springs was scheduled for pre-trial conference when he chose to change his plea to no contest.

Assistant District Attorney David Guidry prosecuted the case.

Edwards was babysitting for his then-girlfriend in 2010 when the incident occurred. At this time the victim was 11 months old.

Edward first told officers from the Denham Springs Police Department that he simply found the child unresponsive and did not know what had happened. Later, the defendant told officers that the child had fallen from a bed and landed on the floor.

“Detective Zach Albritton with the DSPD began testing theories and conferred with experts, including the child's doctors, and was able to deduce what actually caused the trauma,” said Guidry.

Through his investigation, Albritton was able to prove that the incident had not occurred as Edwards claimed, and the defendant eventually admitted that he threw the child onto the ceramic tile floor.

The baby suffered serious injuries and nearly died, Guidry explained. Doctors reported that the child, who has been placed with a foster family, will have long-term and permanent health issues as a result of the attack.

“ We were able to successfully prosecute the case because of the detailed and thorough investigation by the DSPD,” said Guidry, “Also, in preparing the case for court, I received a great deal of help from the doctors and staff at Children's Hospital.”
