INDEPENDENCE, LA (NBC33) — A man on house arrest is now behind bars after he allegedly crashed his vehicle into a utility pole while attempting to outrun deputies.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident occurred during the evening on Thursday, March 7. We’re told a deputy spotted a Ford Mustang driving without headlights. The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect kept going.
Officials say the driver of the Mustang, Darrion Jenkins, 21, of Independence, sped off at a high rate of speed and disregarded traffic signs and signals. The deputy pursued and the chase ended when Jenkins crashed his vehicle into a telephone pole.
After the crash, Jenkins reportedly took off running on foot. He was apprehended a short time later and deputies observed that he was wearing a tracking bracelet around his ankle.
Jenkins was arrested and charged with Reckless Operation, Hit-and-Run (for fleeing the crash), Resisting by Flight (for failure to stop his vehicle during the initial traffic stop) and Resisting Arrest.
