Police are trying to understand why a man attacked his estranged wife after the two returned from a concert together in New Orleans.

“Neither was very clear on how the fight started,” David Melancon, Thibodaux Police Department, said. “The victim could not remember certain parts of the entire night.”

What police do know is that a witness saw the suspect, Garrett Gilliam, 40, violently pull his former wife from a vehicle by her hair. He then hit her repeatedly in the face, and she managed to escape and run screaming for help. However, he caught up with her and dragged her into his apartment located across the street.

“Gilliam admitted that he had smoked marijuana earlier that evening on their way to a concert in New Orleans,” Melancon noted. “He also said that on their way back they made several stops. One of which was in Raceland to purchase drugs.”

Officers found crack cocaine and marijuana at the scene. Gilliam initially denied that the drugs were his, but he eventually confessed and took ownership.

The victim will not face any charges related to the drugs. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Gilliam was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Battery, False Imprisonment, Possession of Crack Cocaine, and Possession of Marijuana.
