St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrested Leonard Yarborough, 52, of Berwick, LA Tuesday morning around 2:21 a.m. on theft and alcohol related charges.

A deputy responded to a shoplifting complaint at a store in Bayou Vista, and stopped the suspects as they were trying to leave the area in a vehicle.

When the officer made contact with the driver, later identified as Yarborough, he smelled the strong odor of alcohol. He also observed that Yarborough was swaying on his feet and slurring his words.

The deputy also noted several open cans of beer and an open bottle of Vodka in the vehicle, and that the license plate on the car was not registered to the vehicle.

The officer identified Yarborough and his passenger, East, as the two subjects seen on surveillance video stealing several fishing poles from the store.

Both were taken to the parish jail and the fishing poles were recovered.

No bail is set for Yarborough, who was charged for driving while intoxicated, possession of open alcoholic beverages in motor vehicles, theft of goods, and violation of registration provisions (switched license plate).

East was released on a summons to appear in court on October 13.
