A Baker man has been arrested for the theft of two ATVs in Napoleonville.

Eric J. Smith Jr., 21, of Baker, was arrested in connection with the theft of a four-wheeler and dirt bike from a Napoleonville residence.

The ATVs, which are valued at approximately $15,000, were reported stolen on October 30, 2013, from the 1600 block of Hwy 402.

During the course of the investigation, detectives reviewed video footage from area businesses and were able to identify a newer model, red Dodge pickup truck leaving the area with the stolen items on a trailer. This information led to the identification of Eric J. Smith Jr. who was working in the area making repairs to the bridge on Hwy 402. Smith was subsequently interviewed and confessed to detectives. Both ATVs were returned with minimal damage.

Detectives from Baker Police Department, Zachery Police Department, and the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office were instrumental in the successful outcome of the investigation.

Smith was subsequently arrested for District Court warrants for two counts of Felony Theft. Smith is currently incarcerated at the Assumption Parish Detention Center. Bond was set at $10,000.

Anyone with additional information concerning this matter is asked to contact the Detective Donnie Calamia at the Criminal Investigation Division (985-526-1627) or the Communications Division (985-369-2912).
