NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — A 14-year-old boy is in the hospital in critical condition after he was shot in the head, according to officials.
The New Orleans Police Department reports that the incident happened just after 2:00 a.m. on Friday, July 26.
We’re told the gunman, Merritt Landry, 33, shot the boy, who was allegedly standing in his front yard near his vehicle.
The teen was taken to the hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.
According to the Mayor's office, Landry serves as a building inspector for the downtown branch of the Historic District Landmarks Commission. The Mayor's office confirmed that Landry has been placed on emergency suspension, without pay, pending the outcome of an ongoing criminal investigation.
“Although the incident is still under investigation, it is clear that this was a tragedy," Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. "The New Orleans Police Department will continue to thoroughly investigate this matter to ensure that all of the facts are brought to light.”
Landry was arrested and charged with one count of Attempted Second-Degree Murder. He was booked into the Orleans Parish Prison.
