LAKE CHARLES, LA (NBC33) — A 39-year-old man from Lake Charles was arrested for his 4th DWI after he nearly caused a crash while he was speeding.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the arrest happened during the morning on Thursday, Sept. 12. They say several motorists called to report that someone was driving recklessly on I-10 between Iowa and Lake Charles.
A trooper located the vehicle and noted several traffic violations, including speeding and a near crash with another vehicle. The trooper initiated a traffic stop and believed that the driver, John A. Hernandez was under the influence of alcohol.
Hernandez was asked to perform a field sobriety test, to which they say he performed poorly. He was arrested and transported to Troop D for further testing.
The investigation revealed that Hernandez had not only consumed alcohol, but narcotics as well. A urine sample is being analyzed to determine what exactly was in his system.
Hernandez has a past arrest for vehicular homicide in 2006. However, those charges were later dropped. He was then arrested for DWI two additional times in 2011.
Hernandez was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. He is currently being held without bond.
Motorists are reminded that impairment caused by narcotics, whether prescribed or not, can have the same legal consequences as impairment caused by alcohol. Drive sober or get pulled over.
To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.
