Man accused of trying to run over State Trooper caught

BATON ROUGE, LA — State Police say the arrested Jakarta Jones, 35, for an early morning Trooper-involved shooting which occurred during a vehicle pursuit in the Valley Park area of Baton Rouge.
The shooting occurred as the Trooper, who is assigned to Troop A in Baton Rouge, moved in to affect an arrest following a brief vehicle pursuit. Troopers, Deputies and Officers with the East Baton Rouge Violent Crime Unit are actively searching for the suspect.
This morning, Friday, March 23, at approximately 2:15 a.m., a Trooper on patrol observed a vehicle fail to yield from the parking lot of a convenience store on the corner of College Dr. and Corporate Blvd. The red Dodge pickup truck also accelerated from the private drive in a reckless manner.
As the Trooper activated his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop, the Dodge sped away in an attempt to evade the Trooper.
A pursuit was initiated and continued through numerous streets in the Valley Park neighborhood. The suspect vehicle left the roadway, entered a field and spun 180 degrees.
As the Trooper exited his vehicle and moved in to affect an arrest of the driver, the vehicle quickly accelerated towards the Trooper. In fear for his life, the Trooper fired at the suspect while taking cover from the accelerating vehicle.
The suspect was able to flee the scene.
Additional patrol Troopers and investigators with the EBR-VCU immediately responded to assist with the investigation. The investigators quickly located the suspect’s vehicle which was abandoned several blocks away. The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab responded to process the vehicle and the scene.
A female passenger in the vehicle was located and is being held for questioning as to her involvement in the pursuit.
