On May 10, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop "A" proved that sometimes you don't even have to go on patrol to find impaired drivers. Troopers placed 31 year old Patrick W. Ruffner of Gonzales under arrest for DWI. The arrest came after Ruffner drove impaired to the Troop to file a crash report.

At approximately 3:00 am on May 10, 2014, a Sergeant working the desk at Troop A received a phone call from Ruffner. Ruffner stated that he had recently been involved in a hit and run crash on I-10 near Siegen Ln. in Baton Rouge. The Sergeant advised Ruffner to come to the Troop and meet with Troopers in order to fill out a crash report. At approximately 3:45 am, a Trooper who had been called back to the Troop to handle the crash report observed a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer exiting the parking lot of the Troop. When the Trooper pulled into the parking lot, the Trailblazer followed him and the driver (later identified as Ruffner) stopped the vehicle near the front door of the Troop and approached the Trooper.

Upon coming into contact with Ruffner, the Trooper suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol. After performing poorly on field sobriety tests, Ruffner was placed under arrest for DWI and escorted into the Troop. Ruffner admitted to the Trooper that he had been drinking alcohol prior to the crash. Troopers also learned that Ruffner's driver's license was suspended, and that the Chevy Trailblazer which Ruffner drove to the Troop was not even the vehicle that he had been involved in the crash in. Troopers charged Ruffner with DWI (1st offense), and Operating a vehicle with a suspended license. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail on the above listed charges.
