The grandparents of a 3-year-old boy were both arrested for trying to keep the child out of state’s custody.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the child was supposed to be turned over to the Department of Children and Family Services on July 9. However, the child’s grandfather, Monty D. Wilson, 54, intentionally took the boy.

On Thursday, July 18, officials released information about the case. They stated that although they did not believe the child to be in any danger, Wilson was wanted for Simple Kidnapping.

Later that same afternoon, Wilson went to the Sheriff’s Office and turned himself in to authorities. However, the child was not with him. That same day they issued an alert for his wife, Rebecca Foster.

Based on the information provided by Wilson, authorities suspected that Foster was attempting to take the child to the East Texas area. Again, they reassured that they did not believe the child was in danger.

Shortly before 10:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19, Foster turned herself in to authorities. The child was located and is said to be in good health.

Although officials could not comment on the exact reason as to why the child was ordered to be removed from his home environment, they did reiterate that no matter their reasoning, the couple did violate the law.

“Apparently this is a prolonged judicial issue with regards to the best interest of the child,” Cpt. Kip Judice, Lafayette Sheriff’s Office, said. “There have been some ongoing issues with regards to the family environment.”

Both Wilson and Foster were booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a charge of Simple Kidnapping.
