METAIRIE, La (NBC33) — A Kenner woman has been arrested for stealing nearly $134,000 from Louisiana Medicaid recipients, according to a statement released by the Attorney General’s Office.
Dina Maumus, 37, surrendered to investigators with the Louisiana Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU).
Maumus worked as a bookkeeper for a Metairie-based nursing home in 2013.
In April, MFCU began investigating her after some of the elderly patients complained to authorities about theft.
Maumus allegedly diverted checks from patients and their family members into her personal bank account.
The checks, which were meant to pay for healthcare services, were made payable to “cash” and signed by Maumus.
According to reports, Maumus would often adjust the patients’ accounts so that it looked as though they no longer owed any money.
Detectives discovered that Maumus diverted 76 checks between February 2010 and December 2011, for a total amount of $133,914.97.
Maumus was charged with twenty-four counts of Felony Theft and booked into Jefferson Parish Prison without incident.
