BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Day 3 - (Saturday, Sept. 24) - Prosecutors called witnesses today involved in the Florida Edwards murder case. They're trying to link the murders of Renee Newman and Edwards. Guillory is prime suspect in the Edwards case.
A D.N.A. expert called by the prosecution stated that fingernail samples taken show there's a one in almost ten quadrillion chance that someone other than Guillory was at the scene of the Edwards murder back in 1999.
The prosecution's D.N.A. expert also stated that a sperm sample recovered from the scene can exclude more than 99% of the population. Guillory though could not be excluded.
The defense did challenge evidence presented by a seperate prosecution witness from the coroner's office. It believes that a zip tie and not Newman's T-shirt was used to strangle her.
Johnny Martinez is scheduled to testify in the case tomorrow. Guillory was convicted of attempted murder in the Martinez case back in 2010.
Day 2 (Friday, Sept. 23) - Today the prosecution focused on D.N.A. evidence that they say links Guillory to Renee Newman's murder.
One of the prosecutions' first witnesses was Chris Johnson. He is the lead investigator in the case. He also interrogated Guillory back in 2006 and 2009. Guillory told Johnson during the second interrogation that he never came in contact with Newman.
However, the prosecution's DNA expert says they definitely had contact.
She stated in court that there's virtually no chance that soembody besides Guillory was at the scene when the murder happened.
The prosecution also brought in evidence that attempted to link the strangulation death of Florida Edwards back in 1999 with that of Renee Newman. Guillory is a prime suspect in that case.
Day 1 (Thursday, Sept. 22) - The prosecution says D.N.A. evidence in the trial against Jeffery Guillory is the smoking gun that will help to convict him of second degree murder. Guillory's defense team says though that Newman's high risk lifestyle puts that into doubt.
What was not in doubt was the most emotional aspect of the trial so far. It was the crime scene video showing Newmn's dead body. This caused members of the Newman's family to cry uncontrollably and leave the courtroom.
The defense though was dealt a big blow before any evidence was even presented. Its motion to introduce evidence that serial killer Sean Gillis was the actual murderer of Renee Newman was tossed out by the judge.
Other evidence introduced at the trial on Wednesday included pictures of Newman's dead body and the shirt allegedly used to strangle her.
