NEW ORLEANS, La (WDSU) -- A 20-year-old driver was killed and his 19-year-old passenger was injured in a drive-by shooting on the Pontchartrain Expressway on Wednesday, Jan. 5 during the afternoon.

The resulting crash and crime scene investigation blocked several lanes of traffic and caused miles-long backups on Interstate 10 for several hours.

Police said the victims were traveling eastbound on the expressway around 12:30 p.m. when a newer model silver SUV drove up alongside them and fired several shots into the driver's side of the car.

The car veered off the road and crashed into a railing, police said. The 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The 19-year-old is in stable condition at a local hospital, police said.

Police said the victims had just left a convenience store off of Carrollton Avenue before getting on the expressway, but they are not yet sure whether that is connected to the shooting.

The names of the victims had not been released. Family and friends of the victims could be seen at the crash site crying Wednesday afternoon.

As of 3 p.m., all lanes of traffic were reopened.
