Gunman injures two after high school basketball game

Algiers, La — New Orleans Police have arrested an alleged gunman who opened fire on some teenagers as they were making their way home from a high school basketball game in Algiers.
On January 23, officials believe Alvin Alvarez, 17, shot another 17-year-old male and injured a 17-year-old female as they were leaving the game at about 9:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of L. B. Landry Avenue near L. B. Landry High School.
The male victim was shot in the leg, and the female sustained powder burns to the face and eyes because she was in close proximity to the gun.
Through interviews and further investigation, detectives were able to identify the suspected shooter as Alvarez. He was found at a relative’s home in the 1900 block of Pace Boulevard.
Alvarez was charged with Aggravated Battery by Shooting, Negligent Injury and Carrying a Firearm at a School Sponsored Function in a Firearm-Free Zone.
