Ascension Parish Sheriff’s deputies say Gerardo Lua, 38, of Gonzales, shot and killed his wife, Alejandra Orozco, 36, and then pulled the trigger on himself.

The murder happened just after midnight Thursday morning. Police arrived on scene after receiving a call from the couple’s 16-year-old son.

The son had been out with friends when he arrived to find his parents’ bodies.

The son led police to a back room where his mother and father were lying on the floor.

According to officers, the mother was unresponsive and had apparently been shot in the head. Lua was lying next to his wife and also had a head wound, but was still breathing.

There was a revolver on the floor next to Lua.

Lua was taken to the hospital and is listed in critical condition.

During the investigation detectives learned that the couple had been having problems, according to the couple’s son.

The couple had been married for about 20 years. In February 2014 Orozco told her husband she wanted a divorce and moved out to live with a new boyfriend. She later returned home.

This investigation is ongoing at this time.
