Former Saints punter sentenced for ‘ponzi scheme’
AUSTIN, TX (NBC33) — A former New Orleans Saints player will spend the next seven years in jail for scamming investors out of millions of dollars.
According to ESPN, ex-punter Russell Erxleben was sentenced in Austin Monday.
Prosecutors say between 2005 and 2009, Russell Erxleben ripped off investors in a massive "ponzi scheme,” the same crime he went to jail for 13 years ago.
The Saints drafted Erxleben in the first round in 1979.
He's best known for a record breaking 67-yard-field goal he kicked in 1977 at the university of Texas, a record he still holds today.
