Surveillance video is what led deputies to lock up five crooks on a three parish-wide burglary spree. Now, all the stolen property, ranging from guns to jewelry to televisions, is going back to its original owners.

Livingston lawyer Michael Cupit was one of the more than a dozen victims.

“Surveillance video, as you can see, is the best thing in the whole world,” stated Cupit. “They went to our house and took one of my own axes, and busted the window in the door and came through the back door.”

It's something he or his wife will never forget.

“I’ve been practicing law for 30 years, and we've never been burglarized, said Cupit. “I didn't know how it felt. Somebody comes into your house where you're belongings are - that you're supposed to be safe in - and does this.”

In all, tens of thousands of dollars worth of stolen property was taken. Deputies say the thieves hit well-hidden homes in Livingston, East Baton Rouge, and Tangipahoa Parishes.

“They look for those homes that are an easy target, where they can hide off the roadway a little bit,” stated Livingston Parish Sheriff-Elect Jason Ard.

Once they found the home, the thieves kicked in the door, and after being inside for only a few minutes, made out with bags of stolen goods.

While Cuplit says it's unfortunate his neighborhood has come to this, he's glad for the round the clock work that will eventually reunite him with the property that's rightfully his.
