WEST FELICIANA PARISH, LA (NBC33) — Dozens of iPads and laptops were stolen from West Feliciana High School in June. Law enforcement officers have found most of them, but they're still searching for the remaining stolen property.
The tablets are given to students at the start of each year to take home. We're told 80 were stolen.
“It’s a shame and it’s a disappointment,” said student, Zakk Mckeehen.
Some of them were found in Mississippi, West Feliciana and Baton Rouge.
“It’s sad, it’s really sad because the school has to pay for these,” said Zakk's mother, Sarah Mckeehen.
Sarah and Zakk were furious when they heard thousands of dollars worth of iPads were stolen from the high school. But now they're thrilled half of them are back in the school boards hands.
"It's great that our kid will be able to receive them again this year," noted Sarah. “When Zakk first came home with the iPad it was a relief because we can’t really afford things like that.”
Two twins, Roderrick and Robert Washington, are locked up. Three others, a 14, 15, and 16 year old are also facing charges.
“It’s sad that you have 3 juveniles involved in this,” said West Feliciana Sheriff, Austin Daniel. “So sad these young people would go this far just to get money to support habits that they have that lead to other crime. It’s just a bad situation.”
“It’s disappointing that someone would take something that means so much to students,” said West Feliciana Superintendant, Holis Milton.
The Washingtons' have been charged with Simple Burglary. Sarah Mckeehan says she's hoping this arrest sends a strong message to those thinking about stealing from children.
“I pray that the kids who took these things know the seriousness of what they have done," she said.
The superintendant said the iPads are critical for helping students learn. If the iPads didn't show up, he would have found money in the budget to replace them.
There are still 40 ipads missing. If you have any information, call the West Feliciana Sheriff's Office at (225) 784-3136.
