Eunice man arrested for theft; impersonated a Black Panther Party member
Eunice, La — A man from Eunice has been arrested for conning people out of money by posing as a member of the Black Panther Party.
Several victims came forward to the Eunice Police Department to file complaints after Joseph Lawrence took advantage of them by promising to assist these victims or family members with legal matters.
Lawrence represented himself as a member of the National Black Panther Party on each of these cases.
Emails sent out by the National Black Panther Party said that Joseph Lawrence was not affiliated with their organization. Several victims have stated that when they made contact with the actual Black Panther Party Offices, they were told to report to the police. Police received copies of these emails.
During the investigation, police seized a computer-generated Black Panther Party application with an image of Joseph Lawrence on the front page.
More of Lawrence’s victims have come forward in jurisdictions outside of Eunice; they have been directed to other law enforcement agencies.
Lawrence is in the Eunice City Jail on charges of Felony Theft.
