A 14-year-old teen was taken to the hospital, and a 19-year-old was arrested after a shooting on Thursday, Feb. 20, around 7:32 p.m. in the 1900 block of St. Croix Drive.

According to a statement from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.

Officers later arrested Elijah Ross, 19, of Baton Rouge, who was also at the scene, and brought him in for questioning.

Police say Ross, along with the 14-year-old shooting victim and other unknown suspects, planned to rob someone for drugs. Ross was hiding a handgun while his partners lured someone under the pretense of wanting to buy drugs.

The 14-year-old took the drugs from the seller and began to run away.

The unknown seller then approached Ross, at which time Ross pulled out his gun and cocked it.

The two struggled for control of the gun, causing it to fire. The seller was allegedly able to take the gun and shoot at the 14-year-old.

According to Ross, the 14-year-old fell to the ground, and the alleged shooter ran from the scene with the handgun.

Ross waited with the defendant until deputies and EMS arrived on site.

The Accused admitted that he was armed with a Glock .40 caliber handgun during the incident.

The investigation is still ongoing.
