What started as an early morning traffic stop turned into a high speed chase that damaged a Lafayette Police vehicle and landed one man behind bars on several charges.

Officials say that an officer noticed a tan Dodge pickup truck driving recklessly on North University Avenue in Lafayette at around 2:20 a.m. When the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver kept going and started a chase.

We’re told the driver went through barricades that were set up on Willow Street. One of those barricades went straight into the path of a police vehicle, causing damage to the cruiser. The driver also damaged several mailboxes and struck a utility trailer as well.

The chase ended on the 100 block of Martin Oaks. Clarence Boyd, 37, of Breaux Bridge was arrested and charged with Aggravated Flight, Resisting an Officer, Criminal Damage to Property, Reckless Operation, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Failure to Secure a Driver’s License, Failure to Register Vehicle, and Notice of Insurance Violation.

Boyd was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
