A 45-year-old Duson, LA, man is in jail on criminal mischief charges after making a hoax phone call to police.

According to a statement from the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, a caller informed police that a major crash had occurred on Interstate 10 in Scott, LA.

Police say the caller reported that the people involved in the crash were trapped and that injuries required the response of Acadian Air Med.

Emergency responders from Lafayette Sheriff’s Office, Scott Police Department, Scott Fire Department, Lafayette Fire Department Rescue Unit, and Acadian Ambulance ground and air units were dispatched to the scene.

However, they never located a crash on I-10, leading them to believe the call was a hoax.

The LPSO investigated the call and on Friday, May 23, arrested Steven S. Baty, 45.

Baty cooperated with detectives and admitted that the 911 call was an intentional hoax.
