St. Tammany Parish, La — A Covington woman was struck Sunday night by a vehicle while walking in the Normand Oaks subdivision.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call Sunday night at around 8:30 p.m. from a driver who struck a pedestrian. The driver, William Seither Jr., 21, reported the crash occurred on Carroll Dr. in the Normand Oaks subdivision.
The victim, Lisa Pitre, 51, was rushed to St. Tammany Parish Hospital and was ultimately transferred to Interim LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans. Pitre remained in critical condition there until she succumbed to her injuries Monday afternoon.
During the initial investigation, deputies thought that Seither may have been impaired when he struck Pitre. When questioned, Seither admitted to using drugs earlier in the evening. He took a sobriety test, as well as having his blood drawn.
Based on his level of impairment at the scene, Seither was arrested that night for DWI, Careless Operation, and First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring. Impairment and speed were believed to be contributing factors in the crash.
Upon notification of Pitre’s death by the hospital, deputies secured a warrant for Seither on an additional charge of vehicular homicide.
Seither, who was still in the parish jail, was re-booked with his new charge. The toxicology report on Seither’s blood is pending an analysis by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
