Downtown parking meters vandalized

Marcus Wayne Smith, 39, has been arrested in conjunction with a rash of parking meters and were destroyed and robbed in downtown Baton Rouge.

Police found Smith on April 15 at around 1:30 a.m. tampering with parking meters on the 200 block of North Street. He fled on foot to avoid the police.

Officers in a police helicopter spotted the man banging a meter on concrete in a vacant lot in the 600 block of North Street.

He has been charged with 42 counts of Felony Theft and 42 counts of Criminal Damage to Coin-Operated Devices.

Each meter he destroyed was valued at $350, which brings the total amount of meters destroyed to $14,700. Officials still don’t know the amount money stolen from the meters themselves.

-- Parking meters have become the new target for thieves in downtown Baton Rouge.

Over two dozen meters were smashed and emptied of their coins. BRPD believes the crooks are using a sledge hammer or similar blunt object to knock them off their poles and clean them out.

They believe the crime is being committed in the middle of the night.
