Deputies said they were called to a home they removed seven children from last week after a man tried to kill his mother, stabbing her in the stomach with a sword.

According to Spartanburg County deputies, they were called to the Gray Street home of Mark Winkler, 40, Tuesday afternoon where the victim said her son held a bayonet to her throat and stabbed her with the sword.

The 76-year-old woman told deputies Winkler had been trying to get his wife's nerve pills but she hid them from him, but then on Tuesday he found them and took more than a dozen, according to the deputy's report.

After he took the pills, the report said Winkler was arguing with his wife while his mom was lying in bed trying not to intervene. Then Winkler went into the bedroom and attacked his mom with the weapons, deputies said.

According to the report, Winkler pushed the long sword against her stomach, cutting a hole in her sweater and shirt, piercing her skin. The victim confronted Winkler and he left the room, deputies said. His wife was able to get the sword and bayonet away from him and deputies were called, the report stated.

Paramedics were called to the house, but both Winkler and his mom refused treatment, deputies said. The report said the woman only suffered a puncture wound from the assault.

A Spartanburg County judge issued a warrant for Winkler's arrest, charging him with attempted murder. He is being held on $20,000 bond, according to the jail's website.

Winkler, along with his wife, were arrested last week on seven counts each of child neglect after deputies said they found them living in a roach-infested home. The children were placed in Department of Social Services custody, and according to Lt. Tony Ivey with the sheriff's office, they were not at the home during Tuesday's assault.
