Couple arrested for making meth in apartment; 5-year-old child placed into protective custody

A couple is accused of operating a meth lab out of their apartment on Jefferson Highway. The couple's 5-year-old child was located in the home when the illegal drugs were discovered.

According to the arrest report, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at roughly 10:00 p.m. They were contacted by firefighters after they saw a suspected meth lab inside the Jefferson Colonial Apartment Complex. The fire department was there in response to a call regarding a suspected fire inside the apartment.

Deputies conducted a search of the home and located a pot of the stove, empty packages of cold pills, stripped lithium batteries and other various drug paraphernalia.

Amanda Henderson, 26, and Gerard Mark Ische-Degruiter, 27, were both arrested and charged with Creation of a Meth lab, Cruelty to a Juvenile and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. They were both booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

The child was transported to a local hospital for examination and Child Services was notified.
