Cold case detective links man, woman to 2009 murder of elderly couple; third suspect deceased

NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — A man and woman who are both already locked up on unrelated charges and a man who died from a drug overdose have been identified as suspects in the 2009 murder of an elderly couple.
The New Orleans Police Department reports that Carl Novel, 35, and Kashie Fernandez, 33, have been charged with the murder of Oleander and Alpathada Cassimere. The shooting happened on May 10, 2009 at a home located in the 5100 block of Seminary Court in Gentilly Woods.
Officials believe the suspects shot the couple during a robbery attempt. Cold Case Homicide Detective DeCynda Barnes reviewed the case and found evidence connecting three people to the crime.
Novel was previously arrested for First Degree Murder in two separate cases, Crack Distribution, Felon with a Firearm, Several Kidnappings, Several Armed Robberies, Aggravated Kidnapping, Concealed weapon, Illegal use of a Weapon, Attempting to Disarm a Police Officer, Battery on a Police Officer, Resisting a Police Officer, Burglary, Battery Simple Escape, Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Damage to Property, Trespassing, Disturbing the Peace and Traffic.
Fernandez was previously arrested for Armed Robbery, Aggravated Battery and outstanding warrants.
Both Novel and Fernandez have been additionally charged with First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Burglary.
The third suspect, Damien Lee, died in 2009.
